2022 Texas 4-H Congress, applications due March 17

The 2022 Texas 4-H Congress is currently scheduled to take place July 17-20^th , 2022 (Sunday-Wednesday) in Austin, TX (Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol). Please review the 2022 Texas 4-H Congress Letter below. 

 

What is Texas 4-H Congress? This four-day mock legislative experience is intended for 4-H members in grades 9th to 12th, who will assume the roles of legislators, lobbyists, and press corps to gain a first-hand understanding of how the legislative process works. Each registered attendee will create their own bill that focuses on issues concerning Texas and Texas youth. These bills are assigned to the appropriate committee, debated in committee meetings, and then on the floor of the House or Senate. If a bill is successful in negotiation and the legislative debate in all three stages, it is delivered to the Governor of Texas 4-H Congress for his or her signature or veto. Additionally, “License to Lead” has been selected by the Texas 4-H Council as the theme for the Monday night dinner and social. This is your time to say, “The name is 4-H, Texas 4-H…” Delegates are encouraged to dress for a “black tie” affair as you listen to a former member of the CIA.

Important Event Details:

• Age Requirements: 4-H members 9^th – 12^th grade at the time of the event.
• County Selection: Due to restricted space, registration for this event is extremely LIMITED. In order for 4-H members to register for this event, County Agents must coordinate a nomination/selection process and rank members based on priority. Counties should make it a priority to select older 4-H members for the House and Senate that have never attended the event. Counties will need to submit their Nomination List (DOWNLOAD WORD DOC) to the District 10 4-H Email (D104-H@ag.tamu.edu) no later than Monday, March 21, 2022. The District will then make final selections and email the list of selected delegates to participate in Congress prior to March 31, 2022 so selected members can begin registration on 4HOnline.
• Waitlist: All 4-H members who are not initially selected to attend Congress (or inquire about attending after the District nomination deadline) will be placed on a master waitlist and will be notified in case a selected participant can no longer attend. 
• Important Deadlines (Please check letter for ALL important dates/timeline for this event):
• March 17, 2022 – Press Corp & Lobbyist Applications CLOSE on 4HOnline
• March 21, 2022 – District 10 Nominations Due by the County Agent to D104-H@ag.tamu.edu
• April 30, 2022 – Early Bird Registration ($350) CLOSES on 4HOnline
• May 30, 2022 – Bill Submission CLOSES  on 4HOnline. *Note: Bill Submission is REQUIRED by every registered attendee.
• May 30, 2022 – Regular Registration ($375) CLOSES on 4HOnline
• Travel Information:
• Start Date: Sunday, July 17, 2022 District Capitol Tours are on Sunday afternoon (D-10 Tour start time TBA). Dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Opening Session.
• End Date: Wednesday, July 20, 2022 All Participants must depart the hotel by 10:00 am

Texas 4-H Congress

Texas 4-H Congress is a four-day mock legislative experience for 4-H members in grades 9th to 12th (at the time of the event). Bills that are written and sponsored by 4-H members focus on issues concerning Texas and Texas youth. These bills are assigned to the appropriate committee, debated in committee meetings, and then on the floor of the House or Senate. If a bill is successful in negotiation and the legislative debate in all three stages, it is delivered to the Governor of Texas 4-H Congress for his or her signature or veto. Virtual Texas 4-H Congress

While we can't learn about the Texas Government with a couple hundred 4-H youth in Austin this summer, we CAN learn virtually from a Texas Congressional member, a Lobbyist, and a Governmental Staffer on Facebook Live! We can also learn about what a bill is, how to write a bill, and what the Press Corps and Lobbyist positions look like for the 2022 Texas 4-H Congress in our zoom sessions led by Texas 4-H Council members and 4-H faculty! Even better - we CAN review bills written by 4-H youth that had already been submitted for the 2020 Congress. Additionally, if you or your 4-H'ers were Governor for a day, what would YOU support?  

Join us on Facebook Live Monday July 13th, Tuesday July 14th, and Wednesday July 15th at 10 AM on the Texas 4-H Facebook Page for live interviews with leaders in our Texas government as mentioned above. What have your 4-H youth always wanted to ask someone who works in our Texas government? You and your 4-H'ers can submit the questions we will actually ask in the live Interviews!  

Then, join us on Zoom at 10:45 AM Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to learn more about Texas 4-H Congress and allow your youth to discuss submitted bills as if they were the 2020 Texas 4-H Congress Governor. Participation is NOT limited to 4-H members.

Please note that this event is not limited to senior aged 4-H members only as Congress would have been. Both the Facebook live interviews and Zoom sessions are open to youth and adults, not just 4-H youth, of all ages. Some of the topics discussed may not be as captivating for junior aged youth as we will be addressing some of the actual bills submitted for Congress on the Zoom calls, but all youth and adults are welcome to attend.
