American Youth Horse Council Symposium - March 9-11
The American Youth Horse Council is hosting their national symposium in Fort Worth March 9-11th. The symposium presents an opportunity for adult and youth leaders in the horse industry to learn, network, share ideas and grow as an industry. This year's symposium will include a unique focus on horse judging standards and coaching successful youth in judging, as well as equine reproduction with an emphasis on foals, and equine genetics. Horse Validation, regular deadline April 15
The cost of validation is $10.00 per horse if the validation is submitted, approved at the county level, and payment is processed between March 1st and April 15th.
The cost of validation is $20.00 per horse if the validation is submitted, approved at the county level, and payment is processed between April 16th and May 1st.

Texas 4-H Homes for Horses
We are excited to
announce the new grant-funded program Texas 4-H Homes for Horses. Two
informational meeting times are being offered next week (see attached pdf
flyer to share) about this exceptional upcoming program for the 2021-2022 4-H
year. Consider it a tangible way for 4-H youth to help the at-risk
("unwanted") horse population in Texas!
Program objectives
include:
· Reduce
the number of at-risk horses in Texas by providing an outlet for horses that
need additional training in order to be adoptable
· Facilitate the opportunity for new 4-H families to get involved with horses who otherwise might not have been able to participate (monthly horse expense stipend provided!!)

2021 4-H Horse Validation is Open
4-H horse validation is now open on 4-H Connect. Instructions for families are outlined in the pdf below. Horse validation will be open from March 1st through May 1st and the cost will again be $10 per horse through April 15th and $20 per horse from April 16th through May 1st. The updated 4-H connect will only be accepting credit cards for payment.
A few reminders:
- Each
validation must include front view, right side view, and left side view
images. The entire horse should be included in the photo and marking
should be clearly visible.
- If the
horse is registered, a copy of the registration papers must be
uploaded. These papers must list the 4-Her, parent, sibling,
grandparent or legal guardian as the current owner. If the ownership
is in the process of being transferred, please list “pending” in the
registration number area. Once the updated registration papers have
been received please send a copy to me and I can add it to the
validation.
- Uploads
must be images, pdfs are not an accepted file type.
- Families
should validate each horse once. Once the horse is validated any
sibling within that family is eligible to show the horse at district
and/or state 4-H horse show.
- Youth
validating a futurity horse must be at least 4-H age 12 (as of Sept. 1,
2020) and in at least the 6th grade.
Texas 4-H Foundation Equine Grant Program - Application OPEN
We are thrilled to announce that our Texas 4-H Foundation Equine Grant application is now open! In partnership with the Texas Thoroughbred Association and the Texas Racing Commission, Texas 4-H Foundation was awarded grant monies to award to Texas 4-H Equine Programs and 4-H members with current equine projects. We will be awarding the following number of grants:
(10) $5,000
grants available for clubs, counties, and districts
(24) $2,000 grants available for individual 4-H
members with equine projects
Who can apply:
- Individual 4-H Members who currently have equine
projects (will be verified prior to awarding)
- 4-H Club Managers seeking funds for equine programming
- County Agents seeking funds for equine programming
- District Specialists seeking funds for equine
programming
There is no deadline to apply. Applications will
be reviewed monthly until all funds have been awarded.
The first review will be in January 2021 for
December 2020 applications.
If awarded, an individual, club, county, or
district will not be eligible for another grant in this current program.

projects.

TAMU Summer Horsemanship Schools Go Online
Please help us spread
the word to all Texas youth about this opportunity to get personalized
horsemanship instruction through an online video submission from June 29th-July
6th.
Youth simply
submit a 2-5 minute video (https://agrilife.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1Xi0beEA3Wba4gl) of
themselves riding with information about what they want to learn/improve
and a Texas A&M Summer Horsemanship School instructor will reply with
useful training tips and feedback. Great practice for the upcoming State 4-H
Horse Show!
4-H Horse Show Updates
We are very excited to announce that the State 4-H Horse Show
will proceed at the Brazos County Expo July 19-24! Entries will be open on 4-H
Connect June 4th to July 1st. Social distancing requirements have led us to
some necessary modifications, but we are looking forward to seeing everyone and
celebrating the progress of our youth in the 4-H Horse Project. Below you will
find information about show modifications, schedule, validation refund
requests, sponsorship needs, and a new program we've started on social media
called Judging in June. Please read through the information and share with your
horse families. As we all know, the situation we're in is ever-changing, so we
appreciate your patience as we all do our best to make this event happen.

Taylor County 4-H & Open Horse Show
We have re-scheduled the 2020 Taylor County 4-H &
Open Horse Show.
Texas A&M Summer Horsemanship School Program - cancelled
Unfortunately the time has come that we must cancel the Summer
Horsemanship School Program for 2020. Further training of the student instructors
has been put on hold since early March and now we are learning that we cannot
continue their training in May. Additionally, approval to travel across the
state in June is looking precarious at best.
Those
groups that have registered already for a SHS will receive a full refund. A
handful of SHS may continue in the Brazos area, if mandates allow and former
SHS instructors can be committed to teach.
After
48 consecutive years, this may be the first time this program has been
cancelled, but we are moving forward by preparing to offer virtual lessons this
summer with this year's SHS instructors as an educational opportunity for
your horse enthusiasts. More details will be coming soon!
District 10 Horse Show - June 17-18
The District Horse Show is open to any 4-H member who has validated their horse by May 1 of the current 4-H year. The District Horse Show includes all qualifying events. In order for a 4-H member to advance to State in a division, the 4-H member must compete in at least one class in that division at the District Horse Show. There are no open classes offered at the District 10 4-H Horse Show.
2019-2020 District Horse Show Information:
Date: June 17-18, 2020
Location: Dripping Springs Ranch Park & Event Center (1042 Event Center Drive, Dipping Springs, TX 78620)
Please note that at this
time, we are planning on moving forward with Horse Show, however, that is
dependent on what the COVID-19 regulations are at the time. Therefore, no
registrations will be approved until we are approved to proceed by the state.
Horse Validation deadline extended
Upon the recommendation of the Texas State 4-H Horse Show
Committee, we have decided to extend the horse validation deadline to May 16th.
The price will also remain at $10/horse until validation closes. We
anticipate that the committee will be able to make a more informed decision
about the State 4-H Horse Show at the beginning of May, and the plan will be
communicated to you and the horse families as soon as it is solidified.
It is our hope that this change in validation will alleviate some of the
anxiety for families and allow them the time needed to make the best decision
for them. We have received several questions about the possibility of
refunds for validation in the case of cancellations. We are in the
discussion process now with the 4-H office and the State 4-H Horse Show
Committee on the best plan of action for validation funds. We ask that
you please bear with us as we navigate an everchanging and difficult
situation. Please know that we are committed to the 4-H horse project and
working together to achieve the best possible outcome for the youth
involved. We will be in touch at the beginning of May with a plan of
action.
